Bhakti Yoga in Chester, New Jersey!

Bhakti Yoga: Tales and Teachings from the Bhagavata Purana with Dr Edwin Bryant

May 2nd, 5-9pm.

Chester, Long Valley, Morristown, Bedminster, Califon , Flanders & all local friends!  This workshop is not to be missed.  Dr. Bryant teaches throughout the country and it is an honor to have him teach here.  You'll leave feeling inspired, refreshed and with a deeper understanding of Yoga Philosophy.

Although the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali has become the canonical text for yoga philosophy and practice in the West, few in India either presently or historically have actually read the text or even know about it.  In this workshop we will read some of the best-known classical stories of bhakti yoga from the most influential bhakti text over the last millennium and more, the Bhågavata Puråña. We will compare and contrast these practices with those outlined in the Yoga Sütras, where Isvara pranîdhåna, which is Patanjali’s term for bhakti, plays a central role. In addition to an in depth study of the meditational practices of the great yogis of yore, the workshop will also engage one or two of the most popular Krishna stories that lie at the core of much devotional contemplation.

Edwin Bryant is the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University. He has written numerous books including a translation and commentary on the Yoga Sütras of Patanjali, and his most recent work: Bhakti Yoga: Tales and Teachings from the Bhågavata Puråña (www.edwinbryant.org).

Please bring a copy of the Yoga Sutras for reference.
