Student Feature: On Metta, Herniation, and Yoga for Back Care

by Danielle Finkelstein

“May you be happy, May you be healthy, May you be safe, May you live with ease”

As these words are said aloud by our teacher Deanna, we say them silently to ourselves.  We repeat these wishes of safety, well-being and happiness as we begin our class.  These words, part of Metta meditation, could not have come at a better time, as my focus in life has changed.  I've realized that in order to keep my loved ones happy and healthy, there needs to be more focus on my health and happiness.

Danielle Pino Fam.JPG

Approximately seven years ago, I slipped while walking down a flight of stairs, landed on my back which caused a lumbar herniation.  For years, I struggled with chronic pain, which prevented me from living a normal, pain free life.  I was in and out of physical therapy multiple times, seeing various chiropractors who tried to help me get better, but always failed.  Since my injury, I've been blessed with an amazing husband and two beautiful children, now ages three and four.  My life on the surface is complete, but living with this chronic pain has prohibited my ability to play with my children, sit or stand for long periods of time, and has caused me to be bed ridden for days causing me depression and extreme frustration.

After my last appointment with my orthopedist, I was told to try Yoga or Pilates.  I was told that either would strengthen my core and help prevent further injury and degeneration of my discs, which has worsened over time.  (That said, it's important if you have herniation to find a teacher who is specifically trained and qualified to teach Yoga for Backcare - it's a specialized type of yoga practice).

I researched online and was extremely lucky to find Deanna and her various teachers at Dhyana Yoga Arts.  After about six months of focus in Yoga for Back Care & Alignment classes, I've seen significant improvement in my mind and body.  My husband cannot believe how I've strengthened my body and become more flexible and pain-free doing normal, everyday activities.  He truly supported me in taking these classes and cannot believe my remarkable improvement.

Danielle Pino.jpg

I quickly learned that this practice is not just about strengthening my body through various poses, but so much more.  Yoga is about listening to your mind, your body and being able to focus and listen to what your body is saying.  I know I have a long way to go in enhancing my knowledge of the Yoga practice, but I know I am on the right path towards a happier and heathier future.

5k for TWLOHA with Meghan

by Meghan Farrell

RunForIt5kpic.jpg

I am organizing a 5k run/walk for non-profit organization, To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) to be held on April 14th (this is an event that has been happening in Florida and around the world since 2013).  To Write Love On Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide.  TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.  Through our One Love Flows program, supporting a different non-profit every month, February proceeds went to this organization.

Inspired by ahimsa, the yogic principle of non-violence, my mission is to bring people together for a common cause and to foster non-violence in words and actions in the ways we interact with ourselves and others.  I have experienced this at Dhyana Yoga Arts— the first time I met Deanna I knew that she was a good person and I felt welcomed by every teacher at the studio— that is one of the main reasons I chose Dhyana Yoga Arts as my yoga studio and community.  I hope to further inspire community and non-violence through words and actions at this event.  All are welcome! You can choose to dedicate the run/walk to anyone or anything, whether it is for yourself, in honor of a loved one, in the spirit of health, or anything that is meaningful to you!  ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE A FREE CLASS PASS

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO PARTICIPATE:

Step 1: Go here and purchase your 2018 Run For It 5k - Virtual Runners pack. You can select either Level 1 ($25) or Level 2 ($40).

Step 2: Join me on April 14th at 9:30 AM for a run/walk/stroll/skip around Chubb Park.  It will be a laid back event.  If you’re not a runner, that’s ok (I don’t consider myself a runner, so I will most likely be run/walking, or as I like to call it, ralking (rocking) it!).  It’s just about getting out and moving to inspire hope and change.  We will have sport pens so that we can write the word “Love” on each others arms.”  Take pictures and post to social media with hashtag #DhyanaYogaArts and #Runforit5k to be entered into a raffle to win a yoga mat and DYA shirt!

Step 3: Present your running bib at the time of the event, and get your free class pass!

Student Feature: Today Lived Well

by Raisa Tiedemann

My Back:

I have had lower back pain for about 8 years now, which became worse after having my daughter.  It wasn’t until learning from Deanna, that I found I needed to have a good foundation to know how to REALLY take care of my back.  In the past, I endured years of physical therapy, daily chiropractic trips, and even two injections to try to relieve the herniation pain/disc degeneration in my L4-L5.  After the pain started to come back after the last injection, I knew that it was only a matter of time that the pain would be just as bad as before.  I knew that I had to find something that actually works, not just mask the pain.  I drove by DYA many times and it wasn’t until I looked them up was when I finally said to myself “what do I really have to lose, I’m already in pain.”  This was the turning point that made a huge difference in my life.  After the first couple of weeks of daily practice and working with Deanna twice a week in back-care only classes, I was able to stay in a seated position for 30 minutes without being in pain - I didn’t have to make the excuse of my back hurting to my daughter.  I have learned the needed tools to make sure I protect and take care of my back.  Being in your late 20’s and having a doctor say to you that your discs are degenerating is pretty scary, because what has happened you can’t reverse.  With Deanna’s help I now know how to take care of what I have left.

Being a Caregiver:

Raisa pic 2 .jpg

In 2014 my husband was diagnosed with cancer that had spread throughout his body.  From 2014 to 2016 and even now (he has been clear from active tumors for a little over a year) I have been his sole caregiver.  I had to make sure he went to his appointments, drove him to his treatments and made sure he had everything he needed to keep fighting.  At the most intense times of his treatment I would be running on fumes, on auto-pilot trying to keep things together.  It was during these times that I realized the importance of today not what is tomorrow.  Even in the worst of times, I knew that it could have been worse.  That is when I was able to truly appreciate the value of a day, the full 24 hours.  From the months and years leading up to this realization I was a person who would ALWAYS worry about the future, always having a plan for everything, and if my plan did not go the right way I would stress out and anxiety and panic would overtake my mind and my body.  But once I realized to truly appreciate a day and hoping for a tomorrow, I felt such a weight lifted and I was able to finally breathe.

Why I started the 200hr Yoga Teacher Training at DYA:

Raisa pic 1.jpg

For the longest time I've always had that feeling of needing and wanting to give back and help people, but I really didn’t know what I wanted to do to fulfill this.  I've had a lot of things happen in my life and I just wish I had someone or something during those times.  At first, I wanted to do the teacher training to better my practice, but as I let the thought of the teacher training settle in my mind, I realized that this is how I could give back.  I've been in the military for 9 years now, and the one thing I see is a lot of my friends struggling with PTSD.  I know a lot of them turn to destructive alternatives to try to escape or help what is going on, but it only makes things worse.  A lot of veterans are unsure of what to do, and they are very skeptical on trying something new or even being afraid what others may think.  I want to be able to help them and let them know it is okay and to appreciate their life and the things that are in it.

Being a teacher, I would want to help all people, to help ground them so they are able to truly be happy.

“Yesterday is but a dream,
Tomorrow is only a vision.
But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope.”

Student Feature: The Power of Practice

By Autumn Onderko

What better way to celebrate my first anniversary at Dhyana Yoga Arts, than to share my experience with scoliosis.

I was diagnosed (such a scary word) when I was eight years old with two curves, a left lumbar and a right thoracic (both at a degree in the high teens, low twenties). It wasn’t until my teens that it progressed enough to place me into a nighttime bending brace. As if my teenage years weren’t awkward or difficult enough, I was now spending my nights in a very large, uncomfortable and unwanted back brace.  I remember feeling embarrassed, miserable and alone; there were many nights that I even cried myself to sleep.

I understand now that things could have been much worse, but I wasn’t able to see beyond the brace at the time. I was visiting the orthopedist every six months, anxious that my curves may have progressed, and that the brace wasn’t serving its purpose. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case and I was brace-free right before heading off to college (phew!). Throwing that brace away was quite possibly one of the happiest moments of my life.

Throughout college and my early to mid twenties, I stopped visiting the doctor and left my spine unmonitored for about ten years.  Every now and then, I’d feel anxious about its progression; I’d often wonder if people were noticing my asymmetries. For the most part, I wasn't in pain (only when I stood or walked for long periods of time).

It wasn’t until last year that I became curious about the impact yoga might have on scoliosis. I started researching and stumbled upon the Dhyana Yoga Arts website; I wasted no time in reaching out to Deanna. Once joining the studio, I started with private sessions; Deanna created a yoga routine specific to my needs. I started to learn how to work with my curves and how to cultivate new patterns. After a couple of months, I transitioned into group classes and added yoga into my daily routine at home.

Autumn Onderko Scoliosis xrays.jpg

Right before joining the studio, I had x-rays taken to understand what my curves really looked like. My curves had progressed since I had last visited the doctor ten years ago. My right curve had reached 36.6 degrees, and my left, 20.6 degrees.  Just a few weeks ago, I followed up with new x-rays to see if the past year had resulted in any change. Surprisingly enough, my thoracic curve decreased by over nine degrees and my lumbar curve by two degrees. I almost didn't believe my eyes when I saw the updated images. In only a year, and only the addition of a specific daily yoga for scoliosis routine, I've made so much progress (after years of thinking my curves could only get worse).

Joining the Dhyana Yoga Arts family has been a true blessing. In just over a year, I’ve learned to live comfortably and confidently with my curves. I’ve learned to create new patterns and how to treat the pain. I’ve also learned that I’m not alone, that others have a story similar to mine.

Bhakti Yoga in Chester, New Jersey!

Bhakti Yoga: Tales and Teachings from the Bhagavata Purana with Dr Edwin Bryant

May 2nd, 5-9pm.

Chester, Long Valley, Morristown, Bedminster, Califon , Flanders & all local friends!  This workshop is not to be missed.  Dr. Bryant teaches throughout the country and it is an honor to have him teach here.  You'll leave feeling inspired, refreshed and with a deeper understanding of Yoga Philosophy.

Although the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali has become the canonical text for yoga philosophy and practice in the West, few in India either presently or historically have actually read the text or even know about it.  In this workshop we will read some of the best-known classical stories of bhakti yoga from the most influential bhakti text over the last millennium and more, the Bhågavata Puråña. We will compare and contrast these practices with those outlined in the Yoga Sütras, where Isvara pranîdhåna, which is Patanjali’s term for bhakti, plays a central role. In addition to an in depth study of the meditational practices of the great yogis of yore, the workshop will also engage one or two of the most popular Krishna stories that lie at the core of much devotional contemplation.

Edwin Bryant is the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University. He has written numerous books including a translation and commentary on the Yoga Sütras of Patanjali, and his most recent work: Bhakti Yoga: Tales and Teachings from the Bhågavata Puråña (www.edwinbryant.org).

Please bring a copy of the Yoga Sutras for reference.

Tuesday May 2nd 5-9pm.  $65 early-bird by May 1st, $75 thereafter.  Unlimited Members 10% off.  REGISTER HERE.

Restorative Yoga

Why Restorative Yoga?

There are countless studies referring to the rising numbers of people who suffer from issues related to stress. In modern everyday life, many of us tend to be bombarded by stimuli and operating in a state of “fight-or-flight,” aka stress-response. This response is part of the autonomic nervous system and helps us in certain situations such as recognizing danger, giving us strength in emergency circumstances, and getting tasks done. It is common to be living in a state of stress-overload and for this response to be overactive. It can affect overall health, including heart rate, blood pressure, reproduction, sexual function, job and athletic performance, digestion, elimination, energy level, and sense of self.

Restorative Yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which governs the “rest and digest” response or conserve and restore mode. The PNS calms the mind and body, slows heart rate, reduces blood pressure, stimulates GI secretions, and aids the anti-inflammatory response, digestion, and sexual function, to name a few. Restorative Yoga can play an important role in reducing stress, alleviating pain, deepening awareness, resting deeply, boosting the immune system, and cultivating mental focus and overall health. Learn more and build your "relaxation response" at our monthly Restorative Workshops.

A private session is wonderful for students seeking personal attention in their practice that may not be possible in a group class.  Private sessions focus on the student's individual needs, the finer points in alignment and pranayama, and how to adapt the practice to your unique flexibility, body/mind type, and level of experience.  Deanna teaches students working with all types of challenges to work in a way that builds strength and focus with ease and safety.  Many students come with special needs and injuries, including Backcare issues such as herniation, spinal degeneration, spondilolysthesis, spinal fusions, and scoliosis.

*3 Fun Options to Deepen Your Practice through Private Sessions:

1- 25% off Discount on your First Private Session or Package in your home.

2- 25% off Semi-Private Sessions, where you can share your session with another student to make it more affordable and fun.

3- Schedule a Private or Semi-Private Session on July 16th or 17th, or any Sunday after 3pm at our studio.  For available studio slots, see online schedule.  (this option is $108 for Individual Private or Semi-Private for $54 each).
